Ciguatera, an Emerging Human Poisoning in Europe

چکیده

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is the most common nonbacterial food intoxication in the world caused by ingestion of fish with bioaccumulated ciguatoxins (CTXs) [1]. The origin of CTXs is due to a biotransformation of other protoxins, gambiertoxins, which are produced by a microalga, a benthic dinoflagellate of the genus Gambierdiscus. These toxins are bioaccumulated in the food web when toxic dinoflagellates attached to surfaces, for example macroalgae, are consumed by herbivorous fish, which are then preyed on by carnivorous fish [1,2]. The toxins undergo several oxidation steps during this passage through fish digestive systems, increasing their potency [3]. These are in turn consumed by humans, which are at the end of the transmission chain and experience the full effects of biomagnifications [4].

Ciguatera fish poisoning: a first epidemic in Germany highlights an increasing risk for European countries.

Toxin-producing microalgae are thriving worldwide due to coral reef destruction and global warming with major consequences on ecosystems, international trade and human health. Microalgae belonging to the family of flagellate protists, in particular dinoflagellates, secrete a variety of high-molecular-weight polyether toxins that accumulate through the marine food chain to cause disease in human...

Ciguatera poisoning: a global issue with common management problems.

Ciguatera poisoning, a toxinological syndrome comprising an enigmatic mixture of gastrointestinal, neurocutaneous and constitutional symptoms, is a common food-borne illness related to contaminated fish consumption. As many as 50000 cases worldwide are reported annually, and the condition is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific Basin, Indian Ocean and Caribbean. Isolated o...

Emerging tropical diseases in Australia. Part 2. Ciguatera fish poisoning.

Ciguatera poisoning is a food-borne neuro-intoxication caused by consumption of finfish that have accumulated ciguatoxins in their tissues. Ciguatera is a distressing and sometimes disabling condition that presents with a self-limiting though occasionally severe gastro-intestinal illness, progressing to a suite of aberrant sensory symptoms. Recovery can take from days to years; second and subse...

Update on Methodologies Available for Ciguatoxin Determination: Perspectives to Confront the Onset of Ciguatera Fish Poisoning in Europe [1]

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) occurs mainly when humans ingest finfish contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs). The complexity and variability of such toxins have made it difficult to develop reliable methods to routinely monitor CFP with specificity and sensitivity. This review aims to describe the methodologies available for CTX detection, including those based on the toxicological, biochemical...

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning

We report three cases of ciguatera fish poisoning. One patient died secondary to respiratory failure. Two patients showed elevated muscle enzymes and one patients had an abnormal cervical spinal MRI. MRI findings have not been previously described. MRI findings explain the mechanism of the L’hermitte phenomenon (a common complaint) among these patients. Respiratory failure is rare in ciguatera ...
